Tempest Carabello Baum (they/them) is a Baltimore-based audio engineer, music technologist, and composer. They have a passion for new and adventurous applications of technology to composition and performance. As the world of creative technologies continues to develop, Tempest strives to explore new ways of interacting with sound and music.
One of Tempest’s most recent compositions, “Hell According to the Fingerless Machine”, is an ambisonic piece created by misusing a low-quality AI riff generator. The piece was presented at Peabody Conservatory in 2024 as part of a concert highlighting multichannel works. Their most recent digital release, “Grimpledörf” is an absurd 4-part electronic space “opera”, showcasing their stylistic variety.
Tempest recently collaborated with composer Bianca Quigley on the work “Serial Connection Failed”. Part of a collaboration between Peabody’s Composition and Computer Music departments, the piece features music composed by Tempest for a 4-voice microtonal stepper motor synth built by Bianca. Other recent collaborations include artist Claire O’Brocta’s senior TIMARA recital at Oberlin, in which the audience was trapped inside of a video game, as well as various projects with composer Hamish Robb.
Tempest holds a BM in Technology in Music and Related Arts from Oberlin Conservatory, and is currently in their final year of an MM in Computer Music from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University.
